Viewing and Searching the Catalog
Your first view of the online catalog is presented in lot number order in sets of twenty lots. Use the search tools (in the sidebar) to find specific lots based on a variety of criteria. You can set your results-per-page to 50 or 100 if you plan to browse the catalog or a set of results. A PDF of the printed catalog and an Excel spreadsheet version of the catalog are available for download at the top of every page in the Auction section.
Clicking on a rating will display the tasting note for that rating. Clicking on the underlined portion of any lot will bring you to the Lot Detail page, which provides in-depth information including provenance and tasting notes, when available, from Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, Steven Tanzer, Allen Meadows, The World of Fine Wine and Wine Spectator.
The bookmarks feature is available only to registered users. Registration is free and is required for bidding. Bookmarks allow you to keep a list of lots in which you are interested. The "Show Bookmarks" link will return a list of all bookmarked lots which may be used in the event you are unable to complete your bidding in one session.
You will need to register and log in to place bids. To place a bid, enter your bid amount for the lot(s) and click the "Place Bid" button. If more than one bid amount is filled in on the page, each of the bids will be added to your bid sheet. In order to be processed, bids need to be submitted in the correct bid increment, discussed in the next section.
Your bids will be executed at the lowest possible price relative to competing bids. That is, if your bid is $1000 and the only other bid is $800, you will win the lot at $850, one increment above the competing bid. In the event of tie bids, the bid received first will take precedence. If you decide to submit Either/Or bids or place a Limit on your bids, your bids are conditional and will take a lower precedence versus other non-conditional absentee bids.
In order to be processed, bids need to be submitted in the correct bid increment. You will be prompted to change any incorrect increments on the bid sheet. Please keep in mind that all lots are subject to reserves, the confidential minimum price below which the lot cannot be sold. Proper bid increments are as follows:

The Bid Sheet is where your bids will be compiled until you are ready to submit them. Bid amounts can be revised or removed on the bid sheet prior to submitting. "Either/Or" bids can be managed here as well, as will be discussed below.
To access an active Bid Sheet while logged in, you can click the "Bids" link at the top of the site or the "MY XXXX BIDSHEET" from the sidebar when in the Auction section of the site.
Bidders familiar with our old website will find that we have changed how previously submitted bids are kept. You will be able to view your bidsheet at any time during the pre-bidding period for an auction, and then for several days afterwards. You will also be able to add more bids and/or edit previously submitted bids. The bidsheet will show you what your entire list of bids for an auction are, and will show you a date stamp for each bid.
If you return to edit previously submitted bids or submit additional bids, only the edited/ new bids will be carried through the submission process.
"Either/Or" Bids refer to multiple bids where only one lot is desired. For example, if there are four lots of the same wine in the sale and you only want one lot, you could place an "Either/Or" bid on all four lots to increase your chances of success. Please note that "Either/Or" Bids are a special type of bid and are never a requirement when bidding. Most often, the "Either/Or" field will be left blank.
"Either/Or" Bids are easily handled on the Bid Sheet. A dropdown has been provided to allow you to enter an "Either/Or" code for those bids you wish to be included in an "Either/Or" Bid. It is suggested that you begin by using the letter "A" followed by the letter "B" and so on. All bids with the same code will be executed as "Either/Or" Bids, the first successful bid cancelling any following "Either/Or" Bids in the same series.
"Either/Or" Bids may be placed on any lots in the catalog. The lots do not need to be sequential. Again, as mentioned in the "Placing Bids" section above, Either/Or bids are conditional and will take a lower precedence versus other non-conditional absentee bids.
If you would like to place a limit on your bidding, you may do so by entering it in the field at the bottom of the Bid Sheet prior to advancing to the next step in the process. Successful bids will only be executed up to the dollar amount of the limit you provide, exclusive of the 19.5% buyer's premium. Only one maximum is permitted per auction. Any questions may be submitted to bids@hdhwine.com.
Please note that a limit should only be used when there are multiple bids on a single bid sheet; each bid represents the maximum you are willing to pay for a given lot, exclusive of the buyer’s premium. Lots are awarded at the lowest possible increment subject to competing bids.
In order to revise a bid that has already been submitted, you may return to your Bid Sheet and click "edit" next to any of your lots to open that lot up for resubmission. Edited bids will override all earlier bids on the said lot. To cancel a bid, click the "cancel" link next to the lot. This will submit a new bid of "0" on the lot..
