1. What is the buyer’s premium?
The buyer’s premium is a fee that all auction houses charge to cover the administrative expenses of holding an auction. This fee goes directly to the auction house. Our buyer’s premium is 19.5% and is applied to every lot sold at auction. Our buyer’s premium is 3-4% lower than every one of our competitors due to our efficiency and focus on our bidders.

2. What other fees will be added to my auction invoice?
In addition to the buyer’s premium, IL tax of 10.25% will be added to all orders picked up at HDH or shipped within IL. Shipping costs will also be assessed based on the location of delivery and the manner selected. We have several shipping options at various price points available.

3. How can I pay for my wine?
You can select your payment option during the registration process from the dropdown box under the title “Preferred Payment Method:”

Credit Card: Your credit card will be charged automatically at the close of the auction. Credit card payments are accepted up to $25,000, with any amount over $25,000 needing to be paid via wire or paper or electronic check.

Check: HDH now accepts paper and electronic checks. An electronic check is a digital payment that serves the same function as a paper check. It requires a customer’s routing and account numbers for an authorized, one-time transfer of funds directly from a customer’s checking account. Please contact accounting at accounting@hdhwine.com or 312.573.5592 to make an electronic check payment.

If you prefer to send a paper check, please make checks payable to:

4. How do I receive HDH’s prompt payment discount?
If you pay your invoice, in full, via wire, paper or electronic check (one-time deduction from your account requiring your routing and account numbers), by 5pm CT the Friday following the sale, you will receive a discount equal to 1% of your auction invoice that can be used towards a purchase at our next auction. The credit does not carry forward beyond the next auction, and is not transferable. Those who pay by credit card are not eligible for the 1% credit.

5. What if I am a commercial client?
If you are a domestic commercial client who is bidding on behalf of a restaurant, wine bar, or other licensee, please indicate that you are such when registering by clicking the “yes” button under the question “Are you a trade client?” Following the close of the auction, please view your HDH auction invoice as a confirmation of your winnings and know that a commercial invoice, which has been routed through the necessary wholesale agent and includes the appropriate fees, will be emailed directly to you in the week following the auction. Any questions regarding payment, fees, taxes, etc. can be directed to our accounting department.

7. Will my login from hdhlive.com work on the new system?
Hdhlive.com login information does not work on the new system. Only hdhwine.com usernames and passwords are still applicable.

8. I logged into hdhwine.com, why do I have to log into the auction site separately?
Our auction site, auction.hdhwine.com, is a separate site from hdhwine.com. Your login information will work for both sites but you will need to log into them individually.

9. I have an account but when I try to log in, it says I don’t have an account?
Because this is a new system, some users might have to recreate an account. We recommend that you use the same e-mail address and password as your hdhwine.com account when you register to bid.

10. I’ve placed bids but didn’t receive an e-mail confirmation?
We no longer send e-mail confirmations as bidding information is now displayed on the auction.hdhwine.com site. You can view your active bids by logging into your HDH auction account and clicking “My Bids” on the menu bar. The “My Bids” tab will show the status of all your bids.

11. If I’m bidding live during the sale, how can I retract a bid?
When bidding live, you cannot retract a bid. To prevent bids made in error, we have added a confirmation step to the online bidding process. When bidding on your mobile device, you must swipe to confirm your bid, and when bidding on a laptop, you must click the “confirm” button that appears after you click the bid button.

12. If I put in an absentee bid, will bidding start at the maximum amount that I wish to bid?
No, our Bids department will execute a bid on your behalf starting at the lowest amount possible. Your bid will only increase from the minimum if other clients begin to bid on the lot. The only situation in which bidding would begin at your maximum is when there are supporting bids making it necessary. For example, if your maximum bid on a lot is $1000 and bidding opens at $500 and no other bids are registered, your initial bid will be $500; however, if bidding opens at $500 but another bidder has put in an absentee bid for $900 and the next increment is $1000, your initial bid will be $1000. If you have any questions regarding bidding, please contact our Bids department and they will be happy to explain in more detail.

13. What happens in the event of a tie bid?
In the event of a tie, the bidder who submitted their bid first will win the lot. This means that bidders who submit absentee bids prior to the start of the auction have a distinct advantage when it comes to tied bids.

14. How do I set up an Either/Or bid?
Select the first lot to be included in the either/or group. Enter your bid. Click the box on the right that reads “Single Bid.” From here, select the option "New Group" from the dropdown menu and it will create group "A."

Click the checkmark to save. The dropdown will now show “New Group” and “Group A.” Add lots to the group until all desired either/or lots are included.

If more than two lots are in a group, a quantity box will appear. Select how many lots within the either/or group you would like to win.

For each new either/or group desired, simply select “New Group” when entering a bid and repeat these steps for Group B, Group C, etc. until all either/or groups are entered.

15. How do I set my spending limit?
This can be done during the registration process or through the “My Bids” page. If you choose to set a limit and you are bidding live, you will not be allowed to bid once you reach your spending limit unless you return to the “My Bids” page to raise or to remove your spending limit.

It is important to note that your spending limit does not include the extra fees that will be added to your invoice including our Buyer’s Premium, taxes, and shipping fees.

16. How do I see how much I’ve spent so far?
Visit the “My Bids” page to view a running total of the lots you have won.

17. What systems and/or browsers work best with the bidding site?
HDH’s auction site is supported on PC and Mac systems.

We recommend using Firefox or Chrome web browsers. Both are available to download free of charge. We do not recommend using Internet Explorer as some clients have reported issues with this browser.

18. Are there other ways to search for and track the lots I want to bid on?
Clients can add lots to their “Watched Lots” page. This function allows bidders to keep track of their desired lots and to then place bids on them through that screen instead of searching through and bidding lot by lot. Clients may also download a PDF or Excel spreadsheet version of the catalog from the auction homepage on hdhwine.com. Some clients find this paper method easier when pinpointing their desired lots and, in particular, when planning out either/or bids.

19. How can I easily switch between live and absentee bidding?
We have found that the most efficient way of switching between live bidding and absentee bidding is to open multiple tabs on your browser. One tab can be set to live bidding to follow the progress of the sale and the other to “My Bids” and/or “Watched Lots” to monitor or adjust upcoming bids. Clients will have to refresh the pages for “My Bids” and/or “Watch Lots” as the sale progresses to update the status of lots sold.

return to top

20. Is there a PDF or Excel spreadsheet of the catalog?
Yes, a PDF and an Excel spreadsheet of the current auction catalog are available on the auction homepage.

return to top

21. What is the list of errata?
The errata is list of lots whose descriptions have changed from the original catalog listing.
