Burgundy Prices Soar Above Estimates as
Hart Davis Hart Sells 100% of Lots for $4.4 Million

Packed Saleroom and Strong Momentum Drive Record Prices;
Direct Consignment from Hudelot-Noëllat Sells Over the High Estimate

  

(March 25, 2013 - Chicago, IL) - Hart Davis Hart conducted the world’s largest Burgundy-only auction (year to date) on Saturday in Chicago and achieved astonishing results. “A Celebration of Burgundy” attracted bidders from all around the world, and the auction was 100% sold. At the end of the day $4,424,415 had been realized against a pre-sale estimate of $2,954,820-4,426,170.

Selections of DRC, Ponsot, Coche-Dury and Rousseau brought intense bidding and prices soared above the high end of the auction estimates, breaking numerous world-records. A case of 1991 Clos de la Roche, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Ponsot smashed the record price when it hammered at $19,120, almost twice its estimated value of $7,000-10,000. Other top lots achieved world-record prices including four bottles of 1985 Clos de la Roche, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Ponsot, realizing $17,925 against $7,500-11,000 estimate, and three bottles of 1991 Chambertin, Armand Rousseau, reaching $8,963 against $3,500-5,500.

The saleroom at award-winning TRU Restaurant was bustling with spirited bidders as well as special guests, Charles Van Canneyt of Hudelot-Noëllat & Chef Johan Bjorklund from Bistro de L’Hôtel de Beaune. A parcel of Hudelot-Noëllat, direct from the Domaine garnered top prices, with a Jeroboam of 2011 Richebourg selling for $3,585, more than doubling the estimate of $1,000-1,500, and a Jeroboam of 2011 Romanée-St.-Vivant selling for $3,585 (est. $1,000-1,500). Guests in attendance broke into applause for the acclaimed winemaker at the conclusion of his parcel.

Internet bidding on HDH Live was particularly active as enthusiastic participants from Asia, South America and the US competed against the room. Eager bidders participated from 30 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Puerto Rico, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

The top lots of the day were dominated by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, with an assortment of 1990 reaching $41,825 (est. $32,000-48,000) and an assortment of 1999 attaining $35,850 (est. $28,000-42,000.) Six bottles of 1991 La Tâche, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti achieved $19,120 (est. $9,000-14,000).
