Hart Davis Hart Commences Fall Season
with $5.4 Million September Sale

(September 22, 2015—Chicago, IL) - Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., the #1 wine auction house in the US, kicked off what promises to be a stellar fall season with a diverse September auction. An impressive 99.81% of the 2,169 lots were sold, bringing in a total of $5.4 million against presale estimates of $3.8–$5.8 million.

The sale’s incredible quality and breadth attracted attention from around the globe with bidders hailing from four continents (including 43 states within the US). Those who were unable to attend the auction in person were able to utilize HDH’s groundbreaking mobile app to participate in real time throughout the sale. Hundreds of clients have downloaded the app and many more have participated online, increasing the number of bidders in each sale dramatically.

Over 40% of all lots in the two-day sale exceeded their high estimates, with many achieving extraordinary prices. The sale featured a host of fine Burgundy and Bordeaux including many mature selections from top producers. Bordeaux lots achieved over $1.9 million with top châteaux from benchmark vintages such as 1982, 1986, 1995, 2000, and 2005 faring particularly well. Bordeaux remains the cornerstone of our business at Hart Davis Hart and we are thrilled to see ongoing interest in this category. The 577 Burgundy lots brought in $1.8 million. Perennially acclaimed Burgundy producer Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was well represented in this sale with 81 lots realizing over $588,000 (est. $495,700-692,550). Wines from Domaine Dujac were also popular among bidders, earning $81,499 (est. $57,920-86,280).

Other old world wines from the Rhône Valley, Italy and Spain also continued to command high hammer prices. A rare encyclopedia of Unico attained particularly outstanding results; the 38 lots totaled over $114,000 – over 30% above the high estimate for the collection. California Cabernet was another important category for the September auction; highlights included remarkable offerings from Diamond Creek, Sine Qua Non, and Screaming Eagle. The sale also contained a spectacular range of rare Bourbon, Rye, Scotch, and Japanese whisky. One notable lot was the 1995 Karuizawa 18 Year Old Japanese Single Malt Whisky, Ghost Series, 2nd Ed., #5022 which sold for $26,290 against presale estimates of $11,000-17,000. This exceedingly rare bottle is one of only 22 produced.

HDH has a proven track record of excellence, and continues to exceed its competition in terms of market share and sell-through rate. HDH’s next sale will be our Annual Celebration of Bordeaux auction on the weekend of October 30. Consignments are still being accepted for the Bordeaux auction through the end of this week.
