HDH’s Largest Celebration of Burgundy Sale to Date
Achieves Outstanding Results

100% Sold Auction Brings in $5.65 Million

(April 4, 2016 - Chicago, IL) - Hart Davis Hart, America’s top wine auction house, continued its strong performance with a 100% sold April sale, posting $5.65 million in sales against a pre-auction estimate of $3.8-5.7 million. This auction was the world’s only commercial auction this year devoted exclusively to Burgundy, and featured one of the largest offerings of Burgundian wines ever sold. The sale was Hart Davis Hart’s largest Celebration of Burgundy to date, exceeding the previous record by well over $1 million. The high hammer prices achieved at this auction confirm that the market for fine and rare wines is robust.

With a catalog that was practically an encyclopedia of the region’s finest wines, HDH’s A Celebration of Burgundy auction presented bidders with opportunities to purchase wines from 159 domaines. Nearly half of all lots exceeded their high estimates, and many achieved record prices.

As in the past, bidders showed incredible enthusiasm for the sale’s wide array of lots from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Spanning an incredible 36 vintages and encompassing all of the domaine’s Grand Cru vineyard sites, the sale’s offering of DRC achieved a total of $1,829,126 (est. $1,290,900-1,920,400), claiming 23 out of the sale’s top 25 lots.

HDH prides itself on representing some of the most knowledgeable and meticulous collectors in the world, and the consignors represented in this sale were no exception. One particularly impressive selection from the cellar of an esteemed Manhattan collector (lots 1056-1142) featured four vintages of Rousseau Chambertin including a remarkable full case of 1993. Another noteworthy consignment from an esteemed collector was comprised of recently released selections from Domaine Duroché, Jean-Marc Roulot, and Lamarche in multiple formats. This selection of wines brought in $266,449 against presale estimates of $164,350-247,050. Both consignments appeared alongside pristine offerings direct from the cellars of Fourrier and Hudelot-Noëllat.

Additional highlights of the sale included:
• 19 lots of Coche-Dury sold for $43,259 (est. $28,550-43,100)
• 31 lots of Denis Bachelet sold for $54,193 (est. $34,750-51,750)
• 63 lots of Domaine Dujac sold for $87,175 (est. $57,130-85,450)

• 24 lots of René Engel sold for $62,677 (est. $35,580-53,070)

This Celebration of Burgundy auction drew in a host of collectors who travelled to Chicago to bid in the auction room and attend a dinner with special guest Jean-Marie Fourrier, featuring the wines of Domaine Fourrier. Those in the busy saleroom competed against bidders around the globe who participated using HDH’s mobile and online bidding platform.

Hart Davis Hart’s next sale will take place the weekend of May 14th and will span the gamut of European and New World wines. After witnessing the remarkable prices fetched by the wines in this sale, HDH has extended the consignment deadline for the May auction through the end of next week so those interested in selling their wine at auction can take advantage of the strong market.
