Hart Davis Hart’s Superb May Sale Draws Record Bidders

#1 Wine Auction House in the U.S. Achieves
100% Sell-Through Rate so far in 2016

(May 16, 2016 - Chicago, IL) - Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., the internationally renowned wine auction house and retailer, continued its success in 2016 with a tremendous May auction that brought in a total $5.9 million against pre-sale estimates of $4-$6 million. 100% of the 2,555 lots were sold this weekend, meaning HDH has not passed a single lot thus far in 2016.

The sale’s incredible quality and breadth attracted a record number of bidders. HDH’s global client base was well represented, as collectors from 44 states and 13 countries participated in the auction. Those who were unable to attend in person used HDH’s groundbreaking auction website and mobile app to participate in real time throughout the sale.

Over 45% of all lots in the two-day sale exceeded their high estimates, with many achieving extraordinary prices. Demand for Bordeaux remained strong as wines from the region brought in over $2.4 million. Mature selections from “super second” châteaux such as Pichon-Longueville, Lalande, Ducru-Beaucaillou, and Palmer fetched especially robust prices. Champagne also fared particularly well in the May sale. 56 lots brought in $119,000 against presale estimates of $75,000-112,000. Highlights included 2 magnums of 1990 Krug which sold for $2,271 (est. $1,100-1,700) and a bottle of 1962 Dom Pérignon, Oenothèque which brought in $2,629 (est. $1,500-$2,200). Bidding was similarly fierce for Rye and Bourbon with 40 of the 42 lots exceeding their high estimates.

A high point of the auction was a very special consignment of library wines direct from Colgin Cellars. This historical offering included wines from every vintage produced at Colgin. Many of the wines in the group had never been commercially released in large formats. Bidders competed aggressively for a chance to add these gems to their cellars resulting in every lot selling above the high estimate. The 17 lots sold for a total of $56,643 (est. $24,400-36,900).

Additional highlights of the sale included:
• Bruno Giacosa: 30 lots sold for $65,725 (est. $44,650-65,800)
• Colgin: 58 lots sold for $130,315 (est. $71,200-107,750)
• Domaine Dujac: 21 lots sold for $34,619 (est. $26,050-38,770)
• Guigal: 22 lots sold for $33,878 (est. $21,450-31,950)

• Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier: 20 lots sold for $58,197 (est. $37,050-55,800)
• Domaine Leflaive: 23 lots sold for $62,080 (est. $39,850-60,350)
