TASTING NOTES

"From an upriver portion of this site near the Homme Mort, Brocard's 2008 Chablis Fourchaume is scented with lime peel, boxwood, walnut oil and intimations of saline and alkaline character that emerge to prominence on a firm and relatively austere palate. The bitter-sweet citrus oil and herbal notes here contribute to real finishing grip but there is a touch of rustic roughness, and the wine's high acids do not translate into refreshment or vivacity to the ideal degree. All that said, character and persistence are present here in spades, and it should be interesting to revisit over the next 4-6 years. Enologist Nadine Gublin (also of Domaine Jacques Prieur) headed-up the Brocards' 2008 efforts from start to finish, including a harvest that extended well into October, while Julien Brocard continues to up the percentage of acreage farmed biodynamically at this enormous property. (Tiny lady bugs and moons are scattered discreetly across the labels of those Brocard wines that issue from "bio" vineyards.) Due to time limitations, I did not taste the entire 2008 collection here, but every wine I tasted could be recommended and is included in this report."
