Bordeaux Futures in Focus: 2020 Montrose
The 2020 Château Montrose demonstrates classic St. Estèphe styling with deep intensity, vibrant fruit, and fine tannins — perfect for the cellar. Montrose fans will not want to miss out on the 2020 release, as buyers have already secured more than half of HDH's sizable allocation.
James Lawther MW writing for Jancis Robinson describes the 2020 Château Montrose as "Dark, intense and very pure but with an energy that makes it vibrant. Big tannic frame but tannins really finely honed. Long and persistent with plenty of drive on the finish. Long ageing potential." Yves Beck echoes Lawther in describing the tenacious yet complex tannic structure: "It is by following the evolution of the tannins to the end of the palate that we realize that [the wine] is endowed with a focused and relevant power."

With expert leadership from CEO and Bordeaux legend Hervé Berland, Château Montrose has seen significant renovations and modernizations in the winery as well as a shift toward organic vineyard management. These efforts emphasize the close attention to detail key in creating a long-lived Bordeaux. The highly-acclaimed 2020 release together with recent landmark vintages has proven how that focus has sustained Château Montrose's reputation and will exalt the St. Estèphe anchor to further acclaim for decades to come.

Critical Accolades
"Lots of finesse and expression in this bouquet. It is marked by freshness through notes of red berries, peppermint and spices. Aerating it also displays notes of black berries and finally a touch of cedar. On the palate, the wine displays fullness and freshness from the start. Its tannins are silky, endowed with a fine grain and broaden along the palate. The foundation of Montrose builds slowly and does not seem obvious at first contact. It is by following the evolution of the tannins to the end of the palate that we realize that it is endowed with a focused and relevant power.... It will take time. It's a great wine to have." (98-100 points) – Yves Beck

"Montrose is for me a complete revelation, simply as good a Médocain en primeur sample as I can recall tasting. It is on par with the Lafite and Latour 2016, with the same wondrous layered complexity. The quality of the tannins is breath-taking and it is a wine that is undoubtedly of 1st growth quality. It has elegance, refinement, depth and concentration - and an almost unprecedented beauty on the nose and the palate that shocked me... such shimmering elegance and finesse this young. A simply extraordinary wine that challenges the senses and that has the most savoury, salivating and sappy of finishes. A study in harmony, this is of clear 1st growth quality."
(98-100 points) – Colin Haye for Drinks Business

"A serious wall of blueberry and blackberry compote, and a ton of savoury Cabernet sinew and freshness. This is a great Montrose, inky, broad-shouldered and structured. It needs time to aerate and open in the glass, then you see the precision, the heft, the chiselling of the fruits with a ton of graphite, cigar box and campfire smoke - huge persistency. This will need a long time and will reward patience. One of the few where a 1986, 2016 and 2010 comparison makes sense."
(98 points) – Jane Anson for Decanter

"Deep colour. Dark, intense and very pure but with an energy that makes it vibrant. Big tannic frame but tannins really finely honed. Long and persistent with plenty of drive on the finish. Long ageing potential." (18+ points) – James Lawther MW for Jancis Robinson
