New York Recap

We want to thank our friends (new and old) for an incredible week in New York! The welcome we received was overwhelming and we deeply appreciate your enthusiasm and energy. Our events, tastings and dinners were filled with an abundance of fantastic wines and some of the best food we have shared in a long time. The 1989 & 1990 Comparative Bordeaux Tastings showcased the greatness of these top vintages and how well they are maturing. Highlights were the esteemed 1989 Château Haut-Brion, the youthful 1989 Château Montrose and the balanced 1990 Château La Conseillante.

We look forward to returning to New York soon and often!

Favorite meals and wines from our staff

"The service and food at Colicchio & Sons was top-notch. There were several great pairings, but my favorite was 1993 Charmes-Chambertin Denis Bachelet from magnum with the Pastrami Cured Duck with Red Cabbage. The Bachelet had great depth of fruit and finish to stand up to the richness of the duck and the cabbage zing."

"I had some great meals in NY, but one dish I’ll never forget was the Foie-lafel at WD50. It looked like falafel, but didn’t taste like any falafel I’ve ever had. The falafel balls were filled with liquefied foie gras. They’d make a killing if they opened a little late night Foie-lafel stand. My meals at Boulud Sud and Colicchio & Sons were also fantastic.

"Some of my wine highlights: At a warm-up event on Sunday night a great friend brought a 96 La Tâche. The nose is just incredible, so explosive. A 1992 Meursault Perrières from Jean-Philippe Fichet was a huge surprise. I didn’t know Fichet ever made a wine from that vineyard… and it was fantastic. Special thanks to Dave Beckwith for that one.

“At Boulud Sud we had a bunch of single vineyard Guigals – the winner for me was the 1990 La Mouline. I had thought maybe the 1991 would outshine it, but not this time. The purity and length on the 90 was awesome. 1997 Hermitage JL Chave that night was fabulous and drinking wonderfully, while in comparison the Guigal wines were as expected, still pretty young and monolithic. I’ve always loved Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet from Louis Carillon. He only makes one barrel of this for the world. A generous guest brought the 1996 version. This was the first time I have ever tasted a bottle of this wine from 96 that wasn’t oxidized. It was amazing.

“At WD50 the surprise of the night was a great bottle of 1992 Grands-Echézeaux from DRC. One of our guests has always claimed that 92 red Burgs are sleepers. He was proven right on that night.

“At Collichio & Sons there were so many great wines opened it’s hard to pick favorites, but I’ll go with 1983 Chevalier-Montrachet from Leflaive, served in magnum. I kept going back to that one all night. 1993 Charmes-Chambertin Bachelet and 1996 Bonnes Mares from Dujac totally overshadowed the 1995 Grands-Echézeaux DRC served in the same flight. You know you are drinking good wines when you kind of brush the DRC aside. And I can’t forget that 1983 Hermitage from Chave… Wow. Then there were the Giacosas and Conternos… Needless to say, I was spoiled rotten and had a great time enjoying these wines with our guests."

"My favorite meal at Mas (la Grillade) was an incredible potpourri of delicious wood-smoked and wood-grilled meats and vegetables. All of the menu items were cooked over or in a wood fire giving incredible flavors to the high quality ingredients. With locally sourced items, the food was incredibly fresh; a highlight was a beautiful duck breast with a cassoulet with house made bacon and sausage.

"The 1989 La Mission Haut Brion lived up to all the hype as it was absolutely singing both at Cork Buzz and Bouley Test Kitchen. The aromatics were amazingly complex, with notes of tobacco, leather and smoke. The tannins were incredibly smooth despite the power; the fruit flavors were very precise and the finish seemed to go on forever. It was a truly memorable wine and my favorite of HDH’s week in New York."

"My favorite pairing of the week was the Pecan Duck and Dirty Rice at The Dutch paired with a 2000 Romanée-St-Vivant from Leroy. A decadent pairing fit for a King, served family style. Perfect..."

"Lunch in the dining room of The Modern was exquisite - the flavors, textures and artistic plating of Chef Gabriel Kreuther’s cuisine was outstanding. My favorite dish was the loup de mer soufflé paired with an incredible 1999 Château Haut-Brion Blanc. This wine showed bright acidity and citrus notes and was exceptionally well-balanced. I hope I get the opportunity to drink more Haut-Brion Blanc!"

"Choosing a favorite wine from the ’89/’90 Comparative Tasting is not an easy task. Runners up include the distinctly elegant ’90 Montrose and the perfect balance of the ’90 Margaux. However, my favorite wine was the 1989 La Mission Haut Brion. With its silky finesse and bold flavor profile, this wine achieved near perfection."

"The very busy week in New York was capped by an incredible evening (and early morning) at Bouley in TriBeCa. Chef Bouley made all the decisions for our table and personally prepared a multi-course magic carpet ride. I now have a full understanding of how he achieved his stellar reputation. The room was so comfortable and luxurious, and it was easy to enjoy the good company of four dear friends that were around the table.

"It's challenging to pick a favorite wine, but I’ve always been particularly fond of Graves from 1989, so it was a special treat to enjoy and discuss 1989 Haut-Brion and La Mission two nights in a row. Other singular highlights included Latour 1990 and a chorus of rare Nebbiolo during a dinner at Malalino."

"My favorite individual dish of my trip came very early on, less than two hours after my flight landed at LaGuardia in fact.

"I met a Brazilian client for lunch at Casa Lever on the ground floor of Lever House on Park and 53rd. Not anxious to overdo it with a long list of meetings and dinners ahead of me, I took the waiter’s suggestion and ordered the Gragnano Arrabiatta. Perfectly cooked Gragnano Spaghetti with just enough mildly spicy, simple, brightly flavored sauce to perfectly cover each strand – that’s it. No edible flowers, no foam, just fresh ingredients combined flawlessly. It was matched with the 2007 Collemattoni Rosso di Montalcino, which had just the right weight and supple, elegant fruit to compliment the meal."
