2016 Futures: Weekly Recap

A number of top Châteaux released their 2016 Futures this week including several super seconds and a handful of excellent Right Bank estates. The stunning Ducru-Beaucaillou (97-98 JS) was one of our favorite wines on our recent trip to Bordeaux and Antonio Galloni called it "one of the highlights of the vintage." The Pichon-Longueville, Baron was singled out by several reviewers as one of the best in the Château's history and is not to be missed. Also of note is the outstanding Pichon-Longueville, Lalande which is certainly a contender for wine of the vintage and an excellent value at just $164 per bottle. Other stand out releases from this week include L’Evangile (98-99 JS), Beauséjour (98-99 JS), Léoville Poyferré (95-97 WA) and Brane-Cantenac (96-98 WA). Order now to secure these fantastic wines for your collection.

"Is this the twin brother of the amazing 2015? We will see. What a superb density and richness with bright and intense tannins that are buttressed with fresh acidity. Beautiful finish." (98-99 points) JamesSuckling.com, April 4, 2017

"...beautifully defined, very detailed bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit laced with cedar and graphite notes, living up to its nom de plume as the "Pauillac of Margaux." The palate is simply the best that I have ever tasted at the estate, without question. This has presence, but also weightlessness, filigree tannin and perfectly pitched acidity, with real intensity and drive. The tension here is outstanding and the persistence is incredibly long..." "...a very linear bouquet, quite strict and intense with a light iodine and marine scent merging with the black fruit...medium-bodied with filigree tannin that forms the foundation of a more masculine Clinet, complex and focused with a subtle spiciness coming through on the finish...this is a magnificent Clinet, cool and mineral-soaked, both cerebral and lip-smackingly delicious." "Very focused and reserved with a mineral, blackberry, licorice and blackcurrant character. Full and refined. Walking a tightrope between steely tannins and and dark fruit. "This young wine shows such pinpoint precision with a full body, dense fruit and gorgeous intensity. Muscular yet toned and beautiful. It really builds on the finish. Very fine-grained. So long and beautiful. Sophisticated power. Oyster shell and iodine undertones. Traditional style yet with a modern interpretation. Savory." (98-99 points) JamesSuckling.com, April 4, 2017

"...opulent but neatly controlled, billowing scents of black cherries, black plum, crème de cassis and violets. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, a killer line of acidity and perhaps one of the most harmonious Poyferré that I have encountered at this juncture. It just glides across the mouth and slips down the throat with consummate ease. Superb." (95-97 points) Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #230, April 2017

"A deeply emotional, moving wine, the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is simply extraordinary. The tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit, while the 100% new oak is remarkably well integrated at this stage. Dark, powerful and brooding, the 2016 possesses remarkable polish for such a big wine. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. Scents of graphite, smoke, leather, tobacco and menthol soar from the glass, enhancing a core of deep, plush, dark fruit. All the elements fuse together in a wine of nearly unparalleled beauty..." (97-100 points) Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, April 2017

Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge

"Wow. This is incredibly rich and exotic. Full-bodied, so deep and long. It lasts for minutes. Perfectly polished tannins evidence how texturally focused and supple this is. Decadent and enticing. From organically grown grapes. Super quality of cabernet is on show here. We will see if 2016 is better than 2015." (97-98 points) JamesSuckling.com, April 4, 2017

"...a clean and precise, quite understated bouquet with fine mineralité, cold stone aromas infusing the black fruit. This has incredible precision...The palate is medium-bodied with supple and lithe tannin. I appreciate the line of acidity here, the smoothness and harmony that takes your breath away. Every atom is infused with life-affirming freshness. It is a wine bridled with incredible focus and delineation..." (98-100 points) Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #230, April 2017

"...one of the most riveting wines of the vintage. Silky and supple on the palate, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, it takes over all the senses and never lets up. The flavors are bright, precise and beautifully nuanced...The wine plays in the dimensions of bright, floral-infused, red-toned fruits, silky tannins and length more than pure power or breadth..."
