"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is darker in colour than its peers. The bouquet is driven by a lot of new oak (indicating that it is probably from Sylvie Esmonin), though there is sufficient fruit to support it. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, very structured and with dense red fruit that grips the mouth. There is fine sapidity towards the finish and although it is, as usual, the most impenetrable of the Clos Saint-Jacques, give it 15 to 20 years in bottle. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting." "A pungent nose is composed today of wood toast and slightly reduction so be sure to decant this if you can't resist opening a bottle. Otherwise there is excellent precision to the rich, intense and mineral-driven flavors that are shaped by firm but ripe tannins and outstanding length on the linear and driving finish. This is a markedly ripe and quite powerful 2016 that is going to need plenty of cellar time." Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, Issue 73
